Jazz Guitar
Learn jazz guitar in the city where it all started! In this course we will explore fundamental concepts of jazz harmony, rhythmic interpretation, and its connection to the local culture of the city. We will investigate historic recordings of the famous jazz guitarists of the 20th century while also transcribing their solos within the context of a given standard/piece.

All experience levels are welcome! Jazz guitar will expand the harmonic and rhythmic palette allowing students a growing musical vocabulary and awareness that can be adapted in most musical situations and styles. Ask anyone around the country, people know when the New Orleans musicians are in the room, we can all play over anything. All of us studied jazz to some degree. Expect to do a lot of listening in these studies. It is pivotal in learning improvisation.

With the first lesson/consultation we will explore all necessary supplies/consumables as well as optimal scale sizes for the instrument depending on the size/age of the student. I highly recommended in any genre of study that students not start on an oversized guitar as it can greatly hinder initial progress. Save that guitar in that attic for something to grow into! Below are just some general approximations cost wise be aware that * items are typically recurring cost purchased as needed.
1x nylon/steel string guitar ($250-$800)
guitar strings ($20)*
guitar cable ($20-$40)
Real book ($20-$40)
music stand ($20-$100)
Feel free to reach out and we can explore all the various options and references for where to purchase I can answer any questions you might have.

Depending on the size of the studio every year I plan to coordinate ensemble rehearsals and masterclasses for students interested. With the ensemble we will spend time rehearsing set music once a week to prep for a final performance/recital. With masterclasses you typically perform for an audience featuring a master guitarist present. There’s a great network of guitarists all globally known, who fly in annually offering these experiences.
